After just completing a stellar junior season that cemented her place among the First Region's all-time greats, Calloway County star Averee Fields has announced that she will play her college basketball for West Virginia, beginning with the 2011-2012 season. Fields has been heavily recruited already by numerous Division I programs, and given her outstanding play for the Lady Lakers this year and her expected growth as a player, it is reasonable to expect that her recruitment could have eventually made her the most pursued prospect in the region's history (if she isn't already). The versatile 6-1 forward led the First Region in scoring (24.6 ppg) and rebounding (13.5 rpg) in 2009-2010, and she found a way to impact games as a brilliant passer and as the region's best all-around defender. Fields' Lady Lakers reached the regional championship game for the third time in her four years as part of Calloway County's rotation. Fields will join a Mountaineer program on the rise. West Virginia finished in a tie for second in the Big East behind undefeated UConn (13-3), en route to a sparkling 28-5 record that has moved them to #10 in the most recent national polls. The Mountaineers receieved a #3 seed in the women's NCAA tournament, and they will meet #14 seed Lamar in first round action on March 21 in Austin, Texas as part of the Memphis region.
